Section: Unix

About:
SANE stands for "Scanner Access Now Easy" and is an application programming interface (API) that provides standardized access to any raster image scanner hardware (flatbed scanner, handheld scanner, video and still cameras, framegrabbers, etc.). The SANE standard is public domain and its discussion and development are open to everybody. The source code is written for UNIX (including Linux) and is available under the GPL, but commercial applications and backends are welcome. The package contains the libraries, net support, and scanimage. The X frontends xscanimage and xcam can be found in sane-frontends.

[»] Anonymous CVS server not working
by Henning Meier-Geinitz - Jan 12th 2003 14:55:19

Currently the SANE anonymous CVS server doesn't work. Use the latest pre version from the website instead.

[»] SANE webserver down
by Henning Meier-Geinitz - Dec 3rd 2001 09:18:29

The SANE main server www.mostang.com (=ftp.mostang.com = panda.mostang.com) has lost its network connection because of the excite@home cable network shutdown since 2001-12-01. It can take some days to get it online again. News about the status will be posted to: http://www.meier-geinitz.de/sane/ . A mirror of the FTP server is: ftp://gd.tuwien.ac.at/hci/sane/.

[»] rpms needed
by nihil - Dec 23rd 2000 05:38:32

there would be great if someone out there could provide some binaries for this app, since me(and, according to the people writing in the sane mailing list) and a bunch of other people can't get the source code compiled.

    by mcadder - Mar 11th 2001 19:00:06

mostang.com (which seems to be the homepage for SANE, has been down (and not in DNS) since at least saturday early. Cached mail archives indicate that my problem compiling v1.00 can be solved by using 1.01, but I haven't found any cache or mirrors of that distro. If there is a new home for SANE, or if someone has a copy > 1.00 they can put up and send me the url, I would greatly appreciate it.

SANE has switched IP's as of Mar. 12th 2001, and DNS is not updated yet. The IP of the webserver is 24.1.107.201, but if you want it to work (it calls images by domain names that don't exist), add these two hosts to your /etc/hosts file:

      24.1.107.201 panda.mostang.com
      24.1.107.201 www.mostang.com

There's a mirror of the source here at http://gd.tuwien.ac.at/hci/sane/ that worked for me, and another at ftp://ftp.u-aizu.ac.jp/pub/misc/device/scsi/scanner/sane that I did not try. Good Luck.

[»] Scanning from a Win32 platform using SANE
by bmacy - Nov 30th 1999 17:54:14

Take a look at WinSANE if you need to scan pictures to a Win32 desktop from a SANE networked scanner.
