No glibc2.2 support

sadly, realplayer 10 requires glibc2.3.
realplayer 8 etc worked fine on glibc2.2, but realplayer 10 requires
glibc2.3.
it's relatively simple to make glibc2.2 builds (id software does it for
example) and they work fine on glibc2.3.

If this is a feature you'd like to see, file a feature request.
The team might have seen it reading this, but it's easier to know for sure
what they are thinking if you file it.

RealPlayer can't play anything usefull?

After installing RP in FC2, I can't play files claimed in description. I
tried mpg, avi and mp3. I always get error message "Unsupported
document type". Is this by design, or am I missing something?

What version are you using? Can you file a bug in the helixcommunity
bugzilla if this still doesn't work for you?

This is the next generation RealPlayer for Linux (and Solaris, PPC etc).
For those who want to know more about how the RealPlayer/Helix Player
projects here is some information from the project home page:
The RealPlayer for Linux is built on top of the Helix Player for Linux and
includes support for several non-open source components including
RealAudio/RealVideo, MP3 etc. Please see our FAQ above for more details on

Help! RealPlayer appears not to work with OSS!

hey all, I'm using the commercial OSS driver (because it's the only one
that works with the hardware) for the Intel 845G chipset audio from 4Front.
When I try to play a file with RealPlayer, it returns cannot open audio
device. Yet no other audio programs are running and read/write/execute
privilages are set for all users on /dev/audio and /dev/dsp. Any help?

On the page that asks for email, etc., when asked to select the Operating
System, select Linux 2.x (has to be non-rpm version), then at the next page
the d/l links are for RP 8.0, SCROLL DOWN, and there will be a push-button
to download the new version of realplayer.

Follow-up to: Lockups with RP8

Seems this lockup only happens with under Gnome (the stock version with
Mandrake 7.1). Found another program that also causes the same lockup
(GRASP). Switched to KDE and the problem went away -- for now. Strange
that it would only happen under Gnome though. Maybe if I upgrade to 7.2
things will improve.

Lockups with RP8.0

Didn't have any problems with RP7, but since upgrading this morning I've
had more lockups than in a week of Windows. Only seems to happen when I
select "Preferences" from the "View" menu. The cursor moves with the mouse,
but the buttons and the keyboard are useless.
I installed the _bin file on a Mandrake 7.1 system. Tried to see if
the RPM would work (since RP has a history of differences between the bin
and RPM versions), but wouldn't install because my system was the "wrong
architecture" (guess I should have bought RedHat :))

One thing

There's only one thing I _really_ want from the linux player now. I mean
the current version is great, but one thing i'd really like to see is full
screen. I've been changing my resolution to 640x480 (from 1280x1024) and
centering the window manually for awhile and the full screen feature would
just be nice to have.

All of the links to realplayer on real.com are expired players and they've
never responded to my technical support questions about it, I think the
tech support people aren't allowed to say anything which would more than
likely mean the death of realplayer for unix.

Strangely enough there's a pretty good reason for this: Particularly, the
way that the runtime linker works w.r.t. BSD is quite bizarre in my
experience. Paricularly, if dll a dlopens dlls b and c, c tends to resolve
its symbols into b. I don't know how to work around this problem. If
anyone does (without using -Bsymbolic), I'd love to hear about it!
I have a compiling freebsd4 version, where the linker seems better
behaved, but I can't test it because I have no audio device there :(

Well, I know it's not too advisable to bite the hand that feeds you, but
what the heck is going on when we are just getting Real 7.0 and the windows
users have 8.0?? Real has obviously been putting in some work on this..it's
a good product..yet since they already have a _stable_ code base for 7,
would it not be that hard to merge it with version 8?
Either way, I'm happy to see a stable version out. Hope it works on
slack ;-)

RPM or non-RPM

In previous versions, I have noticed several differences between the rpm
and non-rpm versions of RealPlayer. For example, the rpm version of 5 and
G2 would always quit working after 1 hour of playback. With G2, the rpm
and nonrpm versions even had a different look.
Any comments on which version works better?

Software Expiration

Yes, software expiration is a bad thing.
But you forget - you're using BETA software. Typically beta software
expires so that you're not using old code... or commercially licensed
software that you're using for free.
I would fully expect beta software to stop working after a set period
of time. In fact, you were TOLD this when you installed the software.
Or don't you remember this?

Forcing Users into Submission

I had the real player version before 7.0 installed on my system (I think
this is G2... right?). One fine day, when I went to run it, it would not
run and just output a message "This version has expired, please
download a new one from real.com." I don't know about you guys, but
this really gets on my nerves. Why should I be forced into upgrading?
RealNetworks makes a nice product, but come on, give the user some freedom.
We (or at least, I) do not like to be hurded like sheep! If I did, I would
be using Windows.

A real improvement

I must admit, I was quite sceptical. RealPlayerG2-6.0 never made it past a
very shaky beta version. I had a look at version 7.0 yesterday and was
quite pleasantly surprised about its functionality and speed (I have a
100MHz Pentium I). The planned functionality (see the various "Help"
menues) sounds promising (although there are currently better players for
most stuff): AU, WAV, MP3, Real audio; AVI, MPEG, Quicktime(4??), Flash,
Real video. Due to the many licenses RealNetworks has, perhaps we'll
finally get something which can play e.g. the Sorenson Codec. (At the
time being, AVI, Quicktime and MPEG don't work yet; Flash plays only some
animations, and all of them without sound on my machine; any audio
(but RealAudio) is better with command line tools ;-))

realplay 7.0 beta for Linux -- finally!!

Maybe that post about the open-source RealPlayer clone got somebody's
attention. :-)
Just installed from RPM and it works great -- I can seek randomly
within 13-minute SMIL presentation without hanging! Preferences even has
OSS/ESD option now.
Only problem so far is that the Netscape plugin, rpnphelper, prints
"BOO!" and coredumps ... the readme file says it doesn't handle URL events
... !?? Oh well, at least we still have Plugger.

Realplayer clone needed

begin with; if they're not even maintaining it anymore, a
clone would be even more valuable. Are there any such
efforts in progress? Would a Realplayer clone even be
possible? I don't imagine they've released enough info to
make it EASY...

v.99092901 -- horrible audio on Dell Inspiron 7000

The rpm G2player-6.0-0.99092901 gives horrible audio on
a Dell Inspiron 7000. I'm pretty sure that the problem is that
the Dell Inspiron only supports 8-bit audio. I am guessing that
the "disable 16-bit audio" button in the preferences is broken in the
current G2 alpha.
Please send me mail if you know a work around (scott.petrack@metatel.com)
In principle, it should not be too hard to make the sound driver do the
conversion.
Real developers -- please remember that there still are otherwise
decent laptops with 8-bit sound. Thanks.

temporarily unavailable. At this time a new RPM is being uploaded
and
should be available in a couple of hours.
The name of the new RPM is G2player-6.0-0.99092901.i386.rpm. If you
attempt to download the RPM and get the previous version, please wait
and
try again.
To install the new rpm, we recommend removing the old version using
rpm -e G2player-6.0
and then installing the new by doing
rpm -i G2player-6.0-0.99092901.i386.rpm
or, you may just do
rpm --freshen G2player-6.0-0.99092901.i386.rpm
These steps will need to be performed as root.
Once again, we appreciate your patience in this matter, and apologize
for
any inconvenience this may have caused.

RealPlayer playback too fast

Audio playback on my system is a few times too fast -- has anyone else had
this problem? (It plays the sound too fast, then claims "net congestion"
and has to pause to load the data to keep up with itself.)

Work Around for rvplayer 5.0

Sound card problems

I use a Sound Blaster 16 (4.16) with an AWE32 synth (modules are sb,
awe_wave, uart401, softoss2, sound and soundlow) with Linux kernel 2.2.10.
RealPlayer G2 ALPHA segfaults, apparently after a select(), I think to
/dev/mixer. Any idea?

It seems that G2 Alpha does not work with the alpha SBLive! driver from
Creative Labs, Inc.
It just exits with a segmentation fault. Has anyone else gotten it to
work with this driver?
I think it's a problem with the driver, because I used G2 with OSS for
a very long time before getting my SBLive! and worked very well, very
stable too.

RealPlayer

Realplayer doesn't work on my system either... it buffers the video and
then crashes with an "audio error type 1." I'm pretty sure it's because I
have an Ensoniq AudioPCI es1371 and playing .au files isn't supported by
the driver :-(... I think RealPlayer is trying to play sound in .au format
and isn't working. If anybody has any workaround for this that they know,
please email me at spong@wam.umd.edu.

realplayer through a firewall

Hi. I can not get realplayer 5.0 to work through my firewall. I have
ip_masq_raudio loaded on the firewall, and when I load a site it says its
playing.. but no sound. When I press stop I hear a moment of sound then
its stops. Very strange. This is on a Debian system (slink) with kernel
2.0.35 on both the gateway and my system.
