About:
OpenGaim is an instant messaging or "text chat" client capable of
communicating over many protocols, including Jabber, AOL Instant
Messenger (AIM), ICQ, MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, Internet Relay
Chat (IRC), and more. It is a loose relative of the Gaim project and
contains much of the source code in Gaim itself. However, OpenGaim
aims to provide quicker releases to fix major problems, and advanced
customization options and features not available in Gaim.

Pointless, adds nothing...
by hackel - May 8th 2004 15:31:16
Please avoid this project, it appears to be the result of one miffed
developer who was unhappy with the excellent work currently done by the
Gaim development team.
These releases add practically no new features, and contrary to what the
author claims, are LESS frequent than official Gaim releases. (Gaim 0.77
was released nearly 3 weeks ago now, with OpenGaim having yet to follow
suit.)
It is certainly in no way more "open" than the official Gaim, as
its name might suggest. I imagine this project will not be very
long-lived.
