The Readline library provides a set of functions for use by applications that allow users to edit command lines as they are typed in. Both Emacs and vi editing modes are available. The Readline library includes additional functions to maintain a list of previously-entered command lines, to recall and perhaps reedit those lines, and perform csh-like history expansion on previous commands.

Very restricting library

While readline offers very good (though occasionally flawed) line editing -
its macro support is lacking. Readline's many quirks, poor documentation,
and inflexibility, isn't a bonus either. When using this library you should
consider that you might end up spending more time working around readline's
limitations than if you would have taken a couple of days to add your own
input editing support. Not to mention that the library isn't installed on
many system.
