Is it possible to have a calendar that is viewable by the public but not update-able by the public so that the entries are only created by specific individuals?

Yes, you can turn public event submissions on and off. We have also added CAPTCHA for public event submissions to cut down on link spamming.

Just dev. version. I'm intersted to install lightweight version on my blog for PDA browsers to coordinatate our internal meetings. Is it possible? Or I need to use "heavy" version? Thanks.

There is no "lightweight" version just yet. As for the development schedule. The current development release (1.1.X) should switch over to the current production release (1.2.X) in the coming months.

[»] Suggestion for anyone having trouble with the send reminder feature...
by Dave - Apr 28th 2005 15:26:59

I am using the [excellent] WebCalendar on my website, and just wanted to share some info regarding some of the tribulations I went through during the deployment phase.

The biggest headache was probably the send reminder feature. I simply could not get it to work with my mail server. I don't remember exactly what the problem was, but I ended up hacking the WebCalendar (I hope the developers don't mind) to make it use another great open-source product named phpmailer-1.72 (http://phpmailer.sourceforge.net/).

After a couple trials, it worked like a charm. Using the mail server I set up, the WebCalendar is able to route the email reminders to wherever they are destined.

Another thing that took a little bit of hacking was putting my website's background as the background of the WebCalendar. Again...I hope the developers don't mind the tweeking.

I'm not at home right now, but If anyone is interested in what I did (in particular to get the phpmailer-1.72) working, reply to this comment and I'll try to remember to check occasionally.

In my opinion, WebCalendar is by far the best web-based calendar available! Let's hear it for the developers!

[»] Re: Suggestion for anyone having trouble with the send reminder feature...
    by Craig Knudsen - May 25th 2005 06:28:51

Many users have problems setting up mail. However, this is not a WebCalendar-specific problem. WebCalendar uses the standard PHP mail function. So, once you have your mail settings in the php.ini file properly configured, WebCalendar can send mail.

Reminders require setting up a cron job on Linux/UNIX and a Scheduled Task on Windows. This is documented in the installation instructions.

You can customize the appearance with custom header/trailer and all colors are configurable.

If anyone has problems setting up mail (or anything else), the SourceForge Help forum is the place to go.

As an admin user, click on "Admin" in the trailer, then select "System Settings." From there, click on the "Public Access" tab. Change the setting for "Allow public access" to "Yes."

This will allow people without WebCalendar accounts to have access. From there, you need to include "Public Access" as an event participant for any event you want available to users who do not login. (There is an option "Public access is default participant" that will make this user selected by default when you create a new event.)

I have to manage only one calendar, but several users need to consult it. When I post an event with 'private' option, it does show up in the public view. I MUST show op, but the content should be private and only visible when logged-id.

      How do I do that?

If the user authentication is handled with standard http authentication, then WebCalendar can use that info and not require a second login. You will still have to manually create each user that you want to grant access to WebCalendar thoughj.

Hi,

[»] Adding events
by Lewis Moseley - May 2nd 2004 09:06:00

I must be missing something. In the demo, I have added several events. Although I did not set the events to "confidental", none of the events show up in the calendar views. I can search for them and find them, so they are there, but I can't see them.

What am I doing wrong?

[»] HTML? Pix?
by Bytesmiths - Sep 25th 2002 06:35:34

It would be great if descriptions could use at least some HTML. Possibly a wider set of HTML for admins than for normal users. Links would be essential.

Also, how about displaying a small icon or picture?

I'm porting my manually-coded event calendar to WebCalendar, and I need these two things, so I guess I'll start looking at the code... :-)

You can include HTML in event descriptions (as of version 0.9.43), but you need to enable this feature in the system settings.

Not necessarily a "bit more"... eGroupware has more apps than just a calendar, but I believe its calendar actually has fewer features than WebCalendar.

It supports exporting to various formats: iCalendar, vCalendar, 'pilotidatebook CSV' (palm pilot) and 'install-datebook' (palm pilot).

I have only tried the first (iCalendar), and that works fine.

You cannot directly sync with the standard WebCalendar distribution. (There is import and export.) However, there is a java-based sync application in the "Patches" area of SourceForge that claims to provide sync with Palm Pilots.

[»] wish list
by Phil Hord - Mar 7th 2000 23:45:12

Love the calendar. It's quick to use and relatively painless. Here are things I'd like to see (based on my 5 minutes of experience with it so far):

Wish list:

  • Color selection anchors with some basic colors samples.
  • Clicking "save" in prefs should send the user to the month-view.
  • Meta-refresh in month view so mere mortals can keep the calendar open and it will "stay up-to-date"
  • Javascript pop-up reminders based on meta-refresh. (Granularity would be whatever the refresh time is, obv.)
  • Auto-approval of new events by other users (or other particular users). This lets trustees admin my calendar.
  • e-mail reminders (obv)
Bugs:
  • $single_user doesn't work until you create a user via admin account
  • "admin" account and password are not given in the documentation.
Much thanks!
